One of My Favorite South Indian Cookbooks
good book on South Indian Vegetarian cooking, especially for beginners
is "Dakshin " Vegetarian Cuisine from South Indian by
Chandra Padmanabhan. This is an authentic South Indian cookbook
with complete dishes and beautiful pictures.
The author has recipes for variety
of rice dishes, breakfast dishes, snacks, vegetables and even
desserts - all South Indian. She also has a section on making
podis (powders) that I think would be useful for many people.
The new bride who wants to impress her husband with Dosai, Vadai,
or Idli can follow the recipes while an experienced cook can find
a new way to make vegetable kootu. Though some of the vegetables
may not be available here in the U.S. you can find substitutes
in your local supermarket. She even gives recipes for various
cooking powders (podis as we call them in Tamil) which I think
is very useful.
One small difficulty if you’re
in America is that she uses the metric system though she does
give equivalent measures in English units in the front of the
book. I have tried some of the dishes and they are good. I recommend
this book to anyone who is interested in making South Indian food
or just likes looking at well done pictures of the food. It is
a good addition to your kitchen library.
