Daal  "Dal"

1/2 cup moong dal
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 tsp. black mustard seeds
1 dried red chili pepper, broken into 2-3 pieces
1/4 onion, chopped ( red onion is sweeter )
1/2 tomato, chopped
1 sprig of curry leaves
1 or 2 green hot chili peppers, chopped
small piece of fresh ginger, finely chopped
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
1/2 tsp. salt ( or to taste )
1 to 1 & 1/2 cup water
juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon ( or 1tbs. "Real Lemon" brand)


Wash the moong dal well, and drain.

Heat oil in a heavy saurcepan with high heat and add the mustard seeds and dried red chili pepper.

When the mustard seeds pop, add onion, tomato and Curry leaves.

When the onion get light brown, add green chili peppers, ginger, turmeric, and salt and stir well.

Soon after add water with moong dal, let it cook for 20 minutes.

When it boils, turn down the heat to medium and put the lid on.

Whenever the water is low, add water.

After the dal is cooked, cool it down and add lemon juice.
